The OCIA team of dedicated volunteers is here to help you. Together in the OCIA community, we discover answers, carry the cross, and follow Jesus. His grace makes all things possible.
Star of the Sea is blessed to have an active OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program. It is for adults seeking Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist in the Catholic Church.

After the Paschal Candle is lit - Our OCIA participants follow the Paschal Candle in procession, led by Fr. Joseph Illo, as the church remains in total darkness.

The Paschal Candle stands at the altar, held by the clergy, as the faithful approach with their lit candles, bearing the light of Christ into the church and proclaiming His victory over darkness.

The Paschal Candle symbolizes the Risen Christ, so placing it in the water shows that Baptism comes from His victory over death. Three times in the Extraordinary Form.

The laying on of hands signifies the calling down of the Holy Spirit upon the newly baptized as they are strengthened in faith and welcomed fully into the life of the Church.

Through the pouring of water three times, our OCIA candidates are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, beginning new life in Christ and entering into the life of the Church.

The newly baptized are clothed after Baptism. It represents their new life in Christ as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist.
