The Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a place dedicated to honoring the boundless love and mercy of Christ, made visible in His Sacred Heart. This devotion invites all who enter to contemplate the heart of Jesus—burning with divine love, wounded by sin, yet overflowing with compassion for every soul.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus centers on gratitude and reparation: gratitude for Christ’s infinite love shown most perfectly in His sacrifice on the Cross, and reparation for the indifference, ingratitude, and offenses that His love continues to endure. At this shrine, the faithful are encouraged to return love for love through prayer, adoration, and a deeper union with Christ.
The Sacred Heart represents the human and divine love of Jesus—His mercy, tenderness, and total self-gift for humanity. Often depicted as a heart aflame with love, encircled by a crown of thorns and surmounted by the Cross, it reminds us of both Christ’s suffering and His victorious, redeeming love.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is lived out in several traditional and deeply meaningful ways:
First Friday Devotion: The faithful are invited to receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of nine consecutive months, usually preceded by confession, in response to the promises of the Sacred Heart.
Holy Hour: Spending an hour in Eucharistic adoration—especially on Thursdays—meditating on Christ’s Passion and offering consolation to His Heart.
Consecration: Individuals, families, and communities may consecrate themselves to the Sacred Heart, acknowledging Christ as King and entrusting their lives to His loving care.
Prayer: From formal litanies to simple invocations such as “Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me,” prayer remains at the heart of this devotion.
Image and Enthronement: Displaying and venerating an image of the Sacred Heart in homes and churches serves as a visible reminder of Christ’s abiding presence and love.
This devotion was especially promoted in the 17th century through the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom Jesus revealed His desire that His Sacred Heart be known, loved, and honored. In response, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Friday following the octave of Corpus Christi.
