Catholic Funeral Rites: A Guide for Families
When a loved one dies, the Church walks with you in prayer, faith, and hope. Through the funeral rites, we commend the deceased to God’s loving mercy and offer comfort and strength to those who grieve, trusting in Christ’s promise of eternal life. The Catholic funeral rites take place in three parts, each helping family and friends pray, remember, and say farewell.
Vigil Service (Wake)
The Vigil Service is usually held at the funeral home during visitation. It is a time to gather with family and friends to pray, listen to Scripture, and remember the life of your loved one. Sharing memories and eulogies is especially appropriate at this service, offering comfort and gratitude for the life that was lived.
Funeral Liturgy
The Funeral Liturgy is the Church’s main prayer for the deceased and is most often celebrated as a Funeral Mass in the church. During this liturgy, we give thanks for Christ’s victory over death, entrust your loved one to God’s mercy, and find hope in the promise of the Resurrection. This is a sacred act of worship and a moment of deep prayer for the entire community.
Rite of Committal (Burial or Interment)
The Rite of Committal takes place at the cemetery or mausoleum and is the final moment of farewell. As the body is laid to rest, the Church prays in hope that the deceased will share in the glory of the Resurrection and eternal life with God.
Your priest, deacon, parish staff, and funeral director are here to guide you through each step and support you during this time of loss.
